What is the Dance Box?

I’m your private dancer
a dancer for money
I’ll do what you want me to do
Tina Turner

Silently, hardly audible you hear the sound of music in the streets. A group of curious people gather in front of a tiny yellow caravan. Suddenly it starts shaking. Some confused and apprehensive looks, giggles. Some of the pedestrian escape, others pick a card out of the box and select their ‘private dance’ – their very personal dance favorite.

The Dance Box is a kind of a Jukebox, but instead of music it plays dance. It stands somewhere in the middle of the public space. Out of a list of 15 dances one can chose a private dance. This dance will be performed for a one-person audience live inside the Dance Box. The performance is recorded and streamed online on dancinginthebox.com. At the same time it can be seen as a video installation in another part of the city, like at a theatre foyer or the facade of a shopping mall.

Each dance costs two Euros.

The Dance Box was created and produced as part of the Festival Freischwimmer 2014/15. Dance Box celebrated its premiere in October 2014 in Berlin and toured afterwards trough Vienna, Zurich, Frankfurt/Main and Düsseldorf. Freischwimmer is a platform for theatre & performance for (young) artists and is co-produced by Sophiensæle, Forum Freies Theater, Künstlerhaus Mousonturm, brut and Theaterhaus Gessnerallee.
